CAVERSHAM GOOD NEIGHBOURS

Caversham Good Neighbours (CGN) is a community initiative formed many years ago to provide essential transport to the elderly and disabled. Volunteer drivers provide door to door transport to your appointments, in their own cars.

History

CGN started life in 1965. We have been helping local residents for 60 years, even during the pandemic, by organising lifts to hospitals, doctors’ appointments and other medical needs. We also do a lot of local trips to help with lunch clubs, hairdressers and dental appointments.

CGN relies solely on donations to pay all its running expenses. We receive voluntary donations from people using our service.

Both office staff and drivers are all volunteers.

Who can use the service?

  • Residents of Caversham and Emmer Green who find it difficult to use public transport
  • People needing transport to medical appointment and other important engagements, for example, lunch clubs, hairdressers, dentists.
  • Those without a car or regular lifts.

How to book

  • Call the office between 9.30-10.30, Monday to Friday at least 3 working days before your appointment on 0118 948 3466
  • The office staff will take your details, date, time and destination of the appointment, whether you use a stick, walker or wheelchair and any specific support you may need.
  • Once a driver has been found the office staff will call you with their name.
  • If it proves impossible to get a driver, you will be phoned at least 1-2 working days before your appointment.
  • After your trip, you will be given an envelope and asked for a donation by the driver. This is not for payment to the driver but as a donation to cover the running costs of our organisation.
